Critically Endangered Turtles That Might Disappear Forever
This post was created with help from AI tools and carefully reviewed by a human (Muntaseer Rahman). For more on how we use AI on this site, check out our Editorial Policy.
When I first started learning about turtles, I had no idea some of them were this close to disappearing forever.
We’re not talking about a small drop in numbers. Some of these species have fewer than 10 individuals left in the wild — and a few may already be functionally extinct.
Of the roughly 360 known turtle and tortoise species on Earth, more than half are threatened with extinction. That’s the highest rate of any major vertebrate group. And the Critically Endangered ones are the ones we’re losing right now, in real time.
In this post, I’ll walk you through what that designation actually means, why turtles are so uniquely at risk, and which species are closest to the edge.
What Does “Critically Endangered” Actually Mean?
The IUCN Red List sets the standard for conservation status worldwide.
To earn the Critically Endangered (CR) label, a species has to meet at least one of these thresholds:
- Population has declined by 80% or more over the past 10 years or three generations
- Fewer than 250 mature individuals remain in the wild
- The geographic range is extremely small and still shrinking
- Quantitative analysis shows a 50% or greater probability of extinction within 10 years
Critically Endangered is one step above Extinct in the Wild. After that comes Extinct — full stop.
It’s not a warning label. It’s an emergency.
Warning: You Might Spend Hours Here
I’ve built the ultimate turtle and tortoise species database. This isn’t your average turtle list. Filter by genus, conservation status, and more. How many species? Which are endangered? What’s the tiniest one? It’s all there.
Why Turtles Are So Vulnerable to Extinction
Most animals bounce back if you reduce the pressure. Turtles don’t — not easily.
Here’s what makes them so hard to save:
They mature slowly. Most turtle species don’t start reproducing until they’re 10–20 years old. Sea turtles often wait 25–30 years. That means every adult you lose takes decades to replace.
They don’t reproduce much. Even when they do breed, survival rates from egg to adulthood are extremely low — often less than 1%.
Their sex depends on temperature. Most turtles use temperature-dependent sex determination. As climate change warms nesting beaches and riverbeds, it’s producing skewed sex ratios that could collapse populations even without direct hunting.
They need very specific habitats. Many species exist in a single river system, one small island, or a single stretch of coastline. Destroy that habitat and there’s nowhere else for them to go.
Put it all together and you get an animal that needs everything to go right just to hold steady — and very little has gone right for them in the past century.
This Hilarious Turtle Book Might Know Your Pet Better Than You Do
Let’s be real—most turtle care guides feel like reading a textbook written by a sleep-deprived zookeeper.
This one’s not that.
Told from the snarky point of view of a grumpy, judgmental turtle, 21 Turtle Truths You’ll Never Read in a Care Guide is packed with sarcasm, sass, and surprisingly useful insights.
And hey—you don’t have to commit to the whole thing just yet.
Grab 2 free truths from the ebook and get a taste of what your turtle really thinks about your setup, your food choices, and that weird plastic palm tree.
It’s funny, it’s honest, and if you’ve ever owned a turtle who glares at you like you’re the problem—you’ll feel seen.
The Worst Hotspots for Critically Endangered Turtles
Southeast Asia is the epicenter of the crisis. Countries like Vietnam, China, Myanmar, Cambodia, and Thailand have massive demand for turtles — for food, traditional medicine, and the exotic pet trade. Hundreds of thousands of turtles move through these markets every year.
Madagascar is ground zero for critically endangered tortoises. The island’s endemic species — including the Ploughshare and Radiated Tortoise — are being strip-mined by collectors who export them to Asia and Europe.
The American Southeast has its own quiet crisis. Freshwater river turtles in states like Alabama and Tennessee face habitat degradation from dams, agricultural runoff, and water quality decline.
South Asia — particularly India and Sri Lanka — is losing species to a combination of habitat loss, road mortality, and local trade.
Five Turtle Species on the Very Edge Right Now
Yangtze Giant Softshell Turtle
This might be the rarest turtle alive.
The Yangtze Giant Softshell (Rafetus swinhoei) is a massive freshwater softshell turtle that once ranged across China and northern Vietnam. As of now, there are believed to be fewer than four individuals known to science — two confirmed in Vietnam’s lakes and one male in captivity at Suzhou Zoo in China.
The last known captive female died in 2019 after an artificial insemination attempt. Scientists are still searching Vietnam’s lakes hoping to find more individuals before time runs out.
Ploughshare Tortoise
The Ploughshare Tortoise (Astrochelys yniphora) is found only in a tiny area of northwestern Madagascar near Baly Bay.
It’s one of the most trafficked tortoises in the world, almost entirely because collectors will pay tens of thousands of dollars for one. Its uniquely shaped shell is unmistakable, and that’s exactly what’s killing it.
Fewer than 500 mature adults are believed to remain in the wild. Conservation teams at Durrell Wildlife Conservation Trust run an intensive captive breeding program, but smuggling pressure is relentless.
Burmese Roofed Turtle
This species was thought to be extinct. Then, in 2002, a skull appeared in a market in Myanmar — and scientists started looking.
The Burmese Roofed Turtle (Batagur trivittata) was rediscovered alive in the Chindwin River. The Wildlife Conservation Society immediately launched a recovery program, collecting eggs from wild nests and raising hatchlings in protected facilities.
Thanks to those efforts, the population now numbers in the hundreds — but it still qualifies as Critically Endangered, and every wild nest matters.
Geometric Tortoise
The Geometric Tortoise (Psammobates geometricus) has one of the most restricted ranges of any tortoise on Earth.
It exists only in a small pocket of the Western Cape in South Africa, in a habitat called renosterveld — a type of shrubland that has been nearly wiped out by agriculture. Less than 10% of the original renosterveld remains intact.
Estimates put the wild population at around 2,000–3,000 individuals. What’s left is severely fragmented, making breeding between populations difficult.
Arakan Forest Turtle
The Arakan Forest Turtle (Heosemys depressa) comes from a single mountain range in Myanmar’s Rakhine State.
It was known only from museum specimens collected in the 1870s and was presumed extinct — until live individuals started appearing in Asian food markets in the 1990s. That rediscovery was alarming, not reassuring.
The wild population is considered extremely small, and almost no habitat surveys have been completed due to the remote and politically restricted area it lives in.

How Can We Help These Turtles
You don’t need to be a scientist to make a real difference.
Support turtle conservation organizations. Groups like the Turtle Survival Alliance, Durrell Wildlife Conservation Trust, and Wildlife Conservation Society run the on-the-ground programs keeping some of these species alive. Donations fund habitat protection, captive breeding, and anti-poaching efforts.
Never buy wild-caught turtles. The exotic pet trade is one of the biggest drivers of population collapse for Critically Endangered species. If you keep turtles, only ever buy captive-bred animals from reputable sources.
Reduce your environmental footprint. Habitat destruction and climate change are structural threats. Reducing plastic use, supporting clean water initiatives, and voting for policies that protect wild places all matter.
Share their stories. Most people have no idea how close some of these species are to disappearing. Talking about them — here, on social media, with friends — builds the awareness that drives funding and policy change.
The worst thing we can do is look away. These animals have survived for 200 million years. The least we can do is make sure they survive the next 50.
