Identification
Description
The Desert Tortoise is a large, terrestrial tortoise characterized by a dome-shaped, robust shell that ranges in color from gray to tan. Adults typically measure between 9 to 15 inches (23 to 38 cm) in shell length and can weigh up to 15 pounds (6.8 kg). Their legs are thick and columnar, adapted for digging extensive burrows, and they possess a distinctive, beaked mouth used for grazing vegetation.
Sexual Dimorphism
Males are generally larger than females and exhibit more pronounced physical traits. They have longer tails and a more concave plastron (the underside of the shell) to facilitate mating. Additionally, males often display brighter coloration on their heads and more robust claw structures compared to females.
