The number that trips people up is the adult size. A hatchling red eared slider fits in a shoebox and ends up needing over 100 gallons. Buy for the adult, not the animal in front of you.

How the numbers are worked out
- Aquatic minimum: 10 gallons per inch of adult shell length. The roomier target is 15 gallons per inch.
- Land floor space: eight times the shell length long by four times wide.
- Each additional animal adds 50 percent of the first animal’s requirement.
- Any species with an adult shell length of 12 inches or more gets an outdoor recommendation, because the indoor footprint becomes impractical.
Shell length here means straight carapace length, measured in a straight line from front to back of the shell rather than over the curve.
Why floor space beats volume for tortoises
Tortoises do not use water volume, they use ground. A tall enclosure adds nothing for them. What they need is uninterrupted floor space to walk, plus a thermal gradient from a warm end to a cool end, which a cramped footprint cannot produce.

Common questions
Is ten gallons per inch really necessary?
It is a floor, not a luxury. Aquatic turtles produce a heavy waste load and the water volume is what keeps that dilute between changes. Undersized tanks are the single most common cause of the water quality problems behind shell rot and respiratory infections.
Can I use a smaller tank while the turtle is young?

Does the filter change the answer?
No. A stronger filter improves water quality but does not create swimming space. Filter for at least twice your water volume, and still give the turtle the full footprint.
