Genus: Nilssonia

Nilssonia is a genus of softshell turtles native to South and Southeast Asia, primarily found in rivers, lakes, and wetlands. These freshwater turtles are known for their leathery, flexible shells and strong swimming abilities. Species within this genus, such as Nilssonia gangetica (Indian softshell turtle) and Nilssonia hurum (Indian peacock softshell turtle), play important ecological roles but face threats from habitat destruction and hunting. Many Nilssonia species are classified as vulnerable or endangered due to declining populations.
