Native Turtle Species Map – Find Turtles by Region
Idaho has no native turtle species.
Most US states have at least one native turtle, but Idaho is one of the few exceptions. It’s mainly due to:
- Cold climate in much of the state
- Mountainous terrain that’s not ideal for turtles
- Lack of suitable slow-moving freshwater habitats where most turtles thrive
Some turtles might wander in from nearby states, but they’re not considered native or naturally established populations.

I’ve built the ultimate turtle and tortoise species database. This isn’t your average turtle list. Filter by genus, conservation status, and more. How many species? Which are endangered? What’s the tiniest one? It’s all there.
