Genus: Rhinemys

Rhinemys is a monotypic genus of freshwater turtles, containing only the species Rhinemys rufipes, commonly known as the Red side-necked turtle. Native to South America, particularly in the Amazon and Orinoco River basins, this species thrives in slow-moving waters with dense vegetation. It is characterized by a distinctive sideneck retracting mechanism, a dark shell, and reddish markings on its limbs. Little is known about its ecology, but it is believed to be omnivorous, feeding on aquatic plants, small invertebrates, and carrion.
