Genus: Cylindraspis

Cylindraspis is an extinct genus of giant tortoises once found in the Mascarene Islands (Mauritius, Rodrigues, and Réunion) in the Indian Ocean. These tortoises were known for their large, dome-shaped shells and long necks, which helped them reach higher vegetation. They typically lived in dry, open habitats, such as grasslands and forests. The genus went extinct in the 18th and 19th centuries due to overhunting by humans and the introduction of non-native animals, like rats and pigs, which destroyed their eggs and young.
