Genus: Carettochelys

The genus Carettochelys consists of a unique type of freshwater turtle, commonly known as the pig-nosed turtle. These turtles are native to the rivers, lagoons, and wetlands of northern Australia and southern New Guinea. What sets them apart is their soft, leathery shell and distinct pig-like snout, which they use for breathing while partially submerged. Unlike most freshwater turtles, Carettochelys species have flippers similar to sea turtles, allowing for swift swimming. Their diet consists of aquatic plants, fruits, and small animals. They are also notable for their ability to remain submerged for long periods by absorbing oxygen through their skin.
