Genus: Acanthochelys

Acanthochelys is a genus of freshwater turtles native to South America, typically found in slow-moving rivers, swamps, and marshes. These turtles are characterized by their oval-shaped, somewhat flattened shells and a distinctive spiked or serrated appearance on the edges of their shells. Species in this genus often have a dark or brownish coloration with lighter markings. They are known for their relatively small size, generally growing up to about 30 cm in length. Acanthochelys turtles are carnivorous, feeding on fish, invertebrates, and other small aquatic animals. Interestingly, they are adapted to survive in both wet and dry conditions, sometimes burying themselves in mud during dry seasons to conserve moisture.
