Native Origin and Distribution

Geographical Range
It is found only in Cuatro Ciénegas Basin, a small valley in the Chihuahuan Desert in Coahuila, Mexico.

Preferred Habitat

They live in warm, spring-fed pools, streams, and marshes with clear water. These wetlands are rich in minerals and surrounded by desert, making the area unique and fragile.

Predators
Young turtles are often eaten by birds, fish, and mammals. Adults face fewer natural predators, but are still vulnerable to humans and habitat change.

Females lay eggs on land in sandy or soft soil. Hatchlings emerge after incubating for about two to three months.

Endangered

Threats
The main threats are habitat loss, water extraction, pollution, and invasive species. Because they live in such a small area, any disturbance can be dangerous.

Conservation Measures
Some areas are protected, and researchers are working to restore water levels and stop illegal collection. Captive breeding and habitat monitoring are also being explored.

Economic Importance

This turtle does not have major economic value. But the Cuatro Ciénegas area attracts researchers and eco-tourists interested in its rare wildlife and ecosystems.
