Genus: Terrapene

Terrapene is a genus of small to medium-sized turtles commonly known as box turtles. They are native to North America and are recognized for their hinged plastron, which allows them to fully close their shells for protection. These turtles are mostly terrestrial, preferring woodlands, grasslands, and marshy areas. They have dome-shaped shells with varied patterns and a long lifespan, often exceeding 50 years. Box turtles are omnivorous, feeding on insects, fruits, and vegetation. Due to habitat loss and road mortality, some species face population declines, leading to conservation concerns.
