Genus: Sternotherus

Sternotherus is a genus of small, freshwater turtles commonly known as musk turtles, named for their ability to release a strong musky odor as a defense mechanism. These turtles are native to North America and are typically found in slow-moving rivers, swamps, and ponds with muddy bottoms. They have domed, often rough-textured shells and relatively small plastrons, allowing for greater limb mobility. Known for their aquatic lifestyle, Sternotherus species are excellent bottom-walkers and tend to be more secretive than other turtles. Their diet consists mainly of aquatic invertebrates, fish, and plant matter.
