Genus: Lepidochelys

Lepidochelys is a genus of sea turtles known for its two species, the Kemp’s ridley (Lepidochelys kempii) and the olive ridley (Lepidochelys olivacea). These turtles are among the smallest sea turtles, characterized by their heart-shaped shells and distinct nesting behavior, often forming synchronized mass nestings called arribadas. Kemp’s ridley is critically endangered, primarily found in the Gulf of Mexico, while the olive ridley has a wider tropical and subtropical distribution. Both species face threats from habitat loss, bycatch, and climate change, making conservation efforts vital for their survival.
