Genus: Kinosternon

Kinosternon is a genus of small to medium-sized freshwater turtles, commonly referred to as mud turtles. These turtles are known for their domed shells and hinged plastrons, which allow them to close their shells partially for protection. Found primarily in the Americas, they inhabit slow-moving waters like ponds, marshes, and streams, often with muddy bottoms. Kinosternon species are omnivorous, feeding on insects, aquatic plants, and small aquatic creatures. Their hardy nature and secretive behavior make them well-adapted to a range of environments.
