Genus: Kinixys

Kinixys, commonly known as hinged-back tortoises, is a unique genus of tortoises found in parts of Africa. They are named for their distinctive shell feature—a hinged carapace that allows the rear portion to close, offering extra protection against predators. These tortoises inhabit a variety of environments, ranging from forests to savannas, and are primarily herbivorous, feeding on grasses, fruits, and leafy vegetation. Known for their shy and reclusive nature, they often retreat into their shells at the slightest disturbance.
