Genus: Geoclemys

The genus Geoclemys consists of a single species, Geoclemys hamiltonii, commonly known as the Black Pond Turtle. Native to South Asia, particularly India, Pakistan, and Bangladesh, this genus is characterized by its distinct black shell adorned with yellow or cream-colored spots, providing excellent camouflage in its aquatic habitats. Geoclemys turtles prefer slow-moving freshwater environments such as ponds, marshes, and rivers, where they primarily feed on aquatic plants, small invertebrates, and fish. This genus is also noted for its conservation concerns due to habitat loss and illegal pet trade.
