Genus: Claudius

The genus Claudius belongs to the family Kinosternidae and includes only one species, Claudius angustatus, commonly known as the Narrow-bridged Musk Turtle. Native to Central America, this turtle is found in slow-moving freshwater habitats like ponds, marshes, and swamps in southern Mexico, Guatemala, and Belize. Claudius turtles are small, with a distinctive narrow bridge connecting the carapace to the plastron. They have a dark, rough shell and a strong, pointed beak. These turtles are carnivorous, primarily feeding on small invertebrates, fish, and carrion. An interesting fact about Claudius is their aggressive nature, often snapping when handled, which is uncommon in many turtle species. Their unique narrow shell and sharp beak make them highly adapted for their aquatic life.
