Genus: Chelydra

Chelydra is a genus of freshwater turtles known for their aggressive nature and powerful jaws. The most well-known species is the common snapping turtle, Chelydra serpentina. These turtles are primarily found in North and Central America, inhabiting slow-moving rivers, ponds, and swamps. Common characteristics include large, rugged shells with ridges, long tails, and a strong bite. They are carnivorous and opportunistic feeders, preying on fish, birds, and small mammals. Despite their fierce appearance, they are often shy in water but can be quite defensive on land.
