Genus: Apalone

The genus Apalone consists of softshell turtles commonly found in freshwater habitats like rivers, lakes, and ponds in North America. These turtles are known for their flat, leathery shells, which are more flexible than typical turtle shells. Apalone species are highly aquatic, spending most of their time in water, and are excellent swimmers. They have long necks, webbed feet, and snorkel-like noses, which help them breathe while remaining submerged. Interesting fact: Apalone turtles are carnivorous, feeding on fish, insects, and other small aquatic animals, using ambush tactics to capture their prey.
